French 19th Century Moon (For Charles Baudelaire)

For quite a while in the late 1960s I was more or less convinced that I had been Charles Baudelaire in a previous life. Today I’m not so sure. But what I am sure of is that the winter moon I gazed up at late one night in February of 1968 was the same moon I had seen in a 19th century Paris sky, through the eyes of, well, perhaps Charles. A mystical, mythical moon that set me sailing on waves of words.

The image of the crystallized moon in that starry cloudless sky stayed with me and germinated and eventually found outlet in this song.

French 19th Century Moon (For Charles Baudelaire) For quite a while in the late 1960s I was more or less convinced that I had been Charles Baudelaire in a previous life. Today I'm not so sure.

The Words:

Orbital gold
distant and old
love and death and hope
you hold
my French 19th century moon

Veiled by my eyes
found by your skies
ancient voices crystallize me
my French 19th century moon

You once freed me
moon light: heed me
lead me home

Whispering sand
warm in my hand
melts my eyes to
understanding
my French 19th century moon

Drowned by your sea
mythical me
drinks a wave of words
that see you
my French 19th century moon

You once freed me
moon light: heed me
lead me home
