There are two ways to tell the truth: either lie about it (fiction) or tell it directly, and as clearly as you can (non-fiction).
Over the years I have written many articles on a wide array of subjects, all of which I have found both instructive (you learn so much finding out so that you can tell others about it). These days, however, I have decided to wind down that that side of my writing, and to let go of non-fiction assignments.
Still, I find there are things I want said directly, and here is where I take a cue from from Montaigne and write an essay.
It was Michel De Montaigne that elevated the personal essay to an art form, and if you’re at all interested in the history of that art, you cannot go wrong by surveying Montaigne first.
Other great essayists include Samuel Johnson, Virginia Woolf, George Orwell (one of my all-time favorites), Jorge Luis Borges, Carlos Fuentes, Henry David Thoreau, and James Thurber (another one of my favorites).
That said, you’ll find the categories and their essays under the “Essays” tab on the menu above.
Happy reading.
